Schout-bij-nacht is a restaurant and bar in the Jordaan in Amsterdam, located at Westerstraat 76–78. The restaurant opened at the end of May 2025 and is inspired by the maritime term for the officer who keeps watch and maintains course during the night. Like this role, Schout-bij-nacht aims to be a place where everything aligns—a restaurant where guests feel welcome at any time of day.
During the day, Schout-bij-nacht serves refined, seasonal dishes with a no-nonsense approach. The kitchen works with strong, high-quality products and combines classic techniques with modern influences, with quality and simplicity at its core. There is also a subtle nod to Dutch cuisine.
As the evening progresses, the atmosphere shifts. The restaurant gradually transforms into a bar where music becomes an essential part of the night. DJs regularly play vinyl, creating a carefully curated soundtrack that fits the space and the moment.
At the bar, the focus is on drinks: a wine list and cocktails.

For our summer exhibition we’ve invited our designer Enno Pötschke to bring our story to life. ‘Perfect mistakes’ is a series of accidental mistakes that occur when developing film. They are a metaphor for what we’re trying to accomplish at Schout-bij-nacht. An ode to unpredictability.
